The Porangahau Bowling Club is a small but very social club. There are approximately 50 members who get together for either social bowls on Wednesday and Friday evenings, or for more formal competitions, usually on Sundays. Club days are any Sunday at 12:45pm when there are no scheduled competitions.
The Bowling club is well-known for its annual Beachcomber’s tournament which is held in January and will see the inaugural Seawitches tournament for women’s triples in February.
The original lawn bowling green (8 rink) was built in 1974 during construction of the Porangahau Country Club. A keen membership of 80+ bowlers played regularly, however due to a falling membership the Porangahau Bowling Club went into recess in 2002.
Then after much fundraising and hard work a 6-rink all-weather surface of greenweave mat was opened in 2016 and the interest in bowls has been revived and is growing the community ever since.
Regular club bowls are played every Sunday from 1-4pm. Twilight bowls are on Friday evening from 5.30 – 7.30pm. Meals and drinks are available afterwards at the Clubhouse.
Visitors and new members are warmly welcomed. Green fees of $5 per player apply to non-members. For more information, phone Paul Stoddart (President) 06 855 5233
